montavilla basement remodel

Located in the Montavilla neighborhood of Portland, Oregon, this unfinished basement was dark and dreary. The client wanted to add a couple bedrooms to the home, as well as a bathroom, laundry room, and large, comfortable gathering space for the whole family.

We added a touch of modern elements including the black plumbing and brushed brass accents throughout. Having a cheerful and relaxing bathroom was a necessity for this busy mom of three. We made sure to have an extra deep tub and a warm, boho-inspired color palette for a cozy vibe. In the laundry space, we went more dramatic and drenched the room in a fun, earthy, berry color. Wall-to-wall cabinetry was added on the opposite side with lots of storage; equipped with a mini fridge, snacks, and a coffee bar. A custom sectional was designed from Perch Furniture that allows the family to spread out and lounge after a long day. In the guest room we wanted to add a cheerful blend of mid-century charm and cottage comfort.

After this whole basement remodel we designed a functional and inviting space that includes a full bathroom, laundry room and coffee bar, two bedrooms, and an entertainment space for the whole family. It was a privilege to be able to work with this wonderful client and provide them with a fun and functional new space in their home for the whole family to enjoy.

“Bringing in Fox and Fern to help with our basement remodel was the smartest thing I did when remodeling our basement. They took a nightmare of a situation and went above and beyond to make it a dream. From the very beginning, Megan and Rachel took on the project with confidence, humor, and professionalism.

While Megan and Rachel are wizards at design and listening to client’s personal styles, it is important to note that their services go beyond simple aesthetics. They were incredibly involved with the physical design of the space, which included frequent communication with our construction company and subcontractors, ensuring that everything was accomplished according to the plan. This included but was not limited to: designing lighting plans; meticulously designing and measuring cabinetry, and then working with the cabinet maker and subs to ensure a correct fit; swooping in to fix address all the issues, from fixture placements to counter heights to wall lengths. Their attention to detail along the way was truly astounding and their knowledge of home workmanship is unmatched.

There was never a problem they couldn’t fix or an issue that they couldn’t untangle. I know without a doubt that our project would not be as amazing as it is without them. Fox and Fern is an amazing team and I cannot wait until I have another project so I can work with them again. They are the absolute best and would highly recommend their services.”
